1. Make a list of what you plug in
Put your everyday devices on the desk: keyboard, mouse, monitor, storage drive and any memory cards. Write down the connector on each cable. A small hub that covers that list may be more useful than a larger dock with ports you will leave empty.
Think about what you connect at the same time. If you need two USB-A devices every day, one USB-A socket means swapping cables. If you never use memory cards, a card reader need not decide your purchase.
2. Check your exact laptop model
Open your laptop manufacturer’s specifications and the hub’s compatibility notes before ordering. Match the model and port requirements rather than relying on the shape of the connector. If a monitor is part of your setup, check the required video capability, resolution and refresh rate.
For example, the Anker model below requires a DP 1.4-capable host for its advertised 4K at 60 Hz HDMI output. Its USB-C sockets do not provide video output. A feature on the box is useful only when the rest of your setup supports it.
3. Read the charging details
If you want one connection for accessories and charging, compare your laptop’s power needs with the power the hub can pass through. Check whether a charger comes in the box, whether you can use your existing one, and which cable the manufacturer requires.
Keep a note of the complete purchase: hub, any new charger, any new cable and delivery. This gives you a more useful comparison than the price of the hub alone.
4. Choose for your routine and budget
For a permanent desk, look at cable reach and where the ports will sit. For a bag, consider the dimensions and the accessories you would have to carry. Avoid paying for a connection you only imagine needing.
Read the seller’s return terms and confirm that the listing is the exact model you researched. Check the current price and delivery options for your country. Specifications can guide a shortlist, but they do not replace testing the hub with your own laptop and peripherals.
One model to compare with your checklist

Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1)
An example to compare if you need a monitor connection, card readers and extra USB ports at one desk.
- HDMI output up to 4K at 60 Hz on a compatible DP 1.4 host.
- USB-A and USB-C data ports rated up to 10 Gbps.
- SD and microSD slots, Ethernet and USB-C power input.
Check before buying: The USB-C ports do not carry video output. The advertised 100 W charging input reserves 15 W for the hub; a suitable charger and cable are required.
