JPG: the everyday photo format

JPG is accepted almost everywhere and gives small files for photographs. It does not support transparency, so transparent areas turn solid, usually white. Convert with Convert to JPG.

PNG: sharp graphics and transparency

PNG keeps hard edges and supports transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and diagrams. Photos saved as PNG are often much larger. Convert with Convert to PNG. Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPG already lost.

WebP: smaller files for websites

WebP usually gives smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality, which helps pages load faster. Some older systems and upload forms do not accept it. Convert with Convert to WebP.

A simple rule

  • Uploading to a form or email: JPG.
  • Logo, screenshot or transparent graphic: PNG.
  • Your own website: WebP, with a JPG fallback if you need one.

Always keep your original file and convert a copy.
